What is an ATEC Assessment, and How is it Used?

When your child begins autism therapy, one of the most exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—parts of the journey is tracking their progress. You want to know that the interventions you are choosing are making a real, measurable difference in their daily life. This is where tools like the ATEC assessment come in.

If you have heard therapists or other parents mention the ATEC, you might be wondering exactly what it is and how it fits into your child’s treatment plan. Here is a comprehensive guide to the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist and how it can help you monitor your child’s growth during in-home ABA therapy.

 What is the ATEC Assessment?

ATEC stands for the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist. Developed by the Autism Research Institute (ARI), the ATEC is a free, widely used questionnaire designed to help parents, researchers, and therapists measure the effectiveness of various autism treatments over time.

It is important to note that the ATEC is not a diagnostic tool. Instead, it is an evaluation tool used to track changes. By completing the checklist periodically—such as before starting a new therapy and then every few months afterward—parents can get a clear, numerical picture of how their child is responding to their current support system.

The Four Core Areas of Evaluation

The Four Core Areas of Evaluation

The ATEC assessment is comprehensive, evaluating a child’s development across multiple facets of their daily life. The checklist consists of 77 questions divided into four distinct subscales:

  • Speech/Language/Communication: This section measures expressive and receptive language skills, such as whether a child can follow directions, use multi-word sentences, or ask meaningful questions.

  • Sociability: This area evaluates how a child interacts with others, assessing factors like eye contact, sharing, participating in group play, and responding to their name.

  • Sensory/Cognitive Awareness: This subscale looks at how a child processes their environment and sensory input. It includes questions about recognizing family members, responding to environmental cues, and general curiosity.

  • Health/Physical/Behavior: The final section tracks sleep patterns, digestion, motor skills, and whether the child experiences challenges like severe anxiety or repetitive behaviors.

 How is the ATEC Scored?

 How is the ATEC Scored?

Unlike many traditional tests where a higher score is the goal, the ATEC scoring system works in reverse. A higher total score indicates a higher level of challenges, while a lower score indicates fewer challenges and greater progress.

When you complete the checklist, you receive a score for each of the four individual subscales, as well as a total cumulative score (ranging from 0 to 179). Tracking these numbers over several months provides a tangible way to see where your child is thriving and which areas might need a bit more focus. For example, you might notice that while your child’s sociability score is steadily decreasing (improving), their communication score remains the same, signaling to your therapy team that a shift in strategy might be beneficial.

Integrating the ATEC with In-Home ABA Therapy

Integrating the ATEC with In-Home ABA Therapy

At Children’s Milestone, our data-driven approach pairs perfectly with tracking tools like the ATEC. Our Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) continuously collect data during every in-home ABA therapy session to measure progress on your child’s individualized goals.

When parents use the ATEC in conjunction with our clinical data, it creates a holistic view of the child’s development. It empowers you as a parent to have informed, collaborative conversations with your BCBA about what is working well and where we can adjust our Natural Environment Teaching (NET) strategies to better support your family’s unique needs.
