How to become a BCBA or an RBT?

Building a Rewarding Career in ABA

The field of Applied Behavior Analysis offers a unique opportunity to combine scientific principles with deep human connection. Whether you are looking to lead clinical cases as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or work directly with children as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), a career in ABA is both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. At Children’s Milestone, we are always looking for passionate individuals to join our growing team.

Becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

The RBT is a high-school-level certification and serves as the frontline of therapy. To become an RBT, you must complete a 40-hour training program based on the RBT Task List, pass a background check, and complete a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA. Finally, you must pass the RBT national exam. It’s an ideal entry point for those passionate about early intervention.

Pursuing the BCBA Certification

A BCBA is a graduate-level professional who designs treatment plans and supervises RBTs. To achieve this, you must earn a Master’s degree in ABA, Psychology, or Education, and complete a specific sequence of coursework. Candidates must also log a minimum of 2,000 supervised independent fieldwork hours before they are eligible to sit for the comprehensive BCBA certification exam.

The Importance of Ongoing Supervision

Neither role is static; the field of ABA requires continuous learning. RBTs must be supervised by a BCBA for 5% of their monthly hours to ensure clinical excellence. Similarly, BCBAs must complete Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every two years. This ensures that every therapist at Children’s Milestone is using the most current, peer-reviewed practices.

Why Choose Children’s Milestone?

Working in ABA requires a supportive environment. We invest heavily in our people by providing the tools and mentorship needed for advancement. Whether you are an RBT starting your journey or a seasoned BCBA looking for a collaborative leadership team, we provide a workspace that values diversity, inclusion, and work-life balance.
