Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are two well-known neurodevelopmental disorders that can have a significant impact on a child’s daily life. Although these disorders have different diagnostic criteria, they share some similarities and differences. Some parents and doctors find it challenging to distinguish autism from ADHD due to overlapping symptoms, prompting the question, are the two disorders related? Let’s shed some light on the topic.
At Children’s Milestone, we understand the importance of early intervention when it comes to developmental delays. If you’re concerned about your child’s development and live within these locations, contact us today.

What is Autism?
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex developmental disability that is characterized by differences in social communication, interaction, and repetitive patterns of behavior. Autistic individuals may have difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, prefer routine, and become overwhelmed by sensory stimuli. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 54 children in the United States are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects a child’s ability to regulate their attention and impulses. ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children who are diagnosed with ADHD may struggle to sit still, pay attention, or follow instructions. According to the CDC, approximately 6.1 million children in the United States (9.4%) aged 2-17 years have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Are Autism and ADHD Related?
Studies have suggested that there may be some overlap between Autism and ADHD. A review of the scientific literature by Dr. Ami Klin found that between 30-80% of autistic individuals have traits of ADHD. Other studies have found that individuals with both conditions may have more severe symptoms than those with either disorder alone. However, it is important to note that Autism and ADHD are distinct disorders with unique diagnostic criteria.

What are the Differences between Autism and ADHD?
The primary difference between Autism and ADHD is that Autism is a social communication disorder whereas ADHD primarily affects attention and impulse control. Autistic individuals have trouble relating to others, maintaining eye contact, and developing social skills, while children with ADHD have difficulty staying on task and controlling their impulses. Autistic individuals also tend to exhibit more repetitive behaviors and interests than children with ADHD.
